Please fix direct messages.
Suggested fixes:
1) Either use Reply-To: or From: with the sender's correct email.
2) If not sharing the email is an issue (and I prefer this one), set up redirect email boxes to get to the sender. <twitterid>@twitter.com could be an option.</twitterid>
The more people who report this problem, the more it gets noticed.

Inappropriate?I agree. Something like this would be a wonderful addition to the already pretty sweet twitter UI.
I’m psyched

Inappropriate?option 1 you have privacy issues.
option 2 you have potential abuse issues.
If Twitter is to move to a the email client platform, then there ought to be a protocol such as in the IM or SMS platforms. For example the email reply would have to come from a verified email account, the subject would read "d + username", and the message would be in the body. Any message over the allotted character limit would have to be truncated on the Twitter servers before being forwarded on.
Good Luck.
I’m anxious

Inappropriate? You wouldn't necessarily have to go that far with the protocol. When you receive the notification, twitter knows who a reply should go to and that could be encoded into the Reply-To header.
Something like "twitter+HASH@twitter.com", which could serve dual purpose as a nonce to avoid abuse.
Of course, that would open a whole 'nother can of worms when it comes to infrastructure and scalability.

Inappropriate? This really isnt a problem but rather a feature request.
